APT18: Treats for Dogs
2 min readNov 29, 2020
I wanted to use up some ingredients around the house. We’re all stuffed from Thanksgiving leftovers, so I made treats for my two dogs.
I created this off the top of my head. Therefore, not all ingredients were measured exactly. But, I know the pups will like it.
Disclaimer: Always check with your veterinarian to see if your dog can have these food items.
~8 apples, cored and diced
4 cups of whole oats
1 15oz can of pureed sweet potato
4 eggs, any size
~1 cup of natural peanut butter
~1 heaping teaspoon of pure cinnamon
- Pre-heat oven to 350F.
- Take your diced apples and cook them in a pan with ~2 cups of water. Cook until they are soft and can be mashed up, with most of the water gone.
- Take 2 cups of your oats and pulse in a food processor until a flour-like substance.
- In a large bowl, combine the processed oats along with the 2 cups of non-processed oats. Mix well.
- Add in the cinnamon and mix well. (Note: Cinnamon is safe for dogs. Read more before including it, in case your pup is sensitive.)
- Take turns mixing in the apple mush (when cooled), the pureed sweet potato, and the natural peanut butter. Mix well until all ingredients are combined.
- Put some cooking spray (e.g. PAM) in a large rectangular baking pan. Scoop mixture in and make level.
- Bake at 350F for about half an hour, then lower heat to 300F for another 20–30 minutes. Make sure it doesn’t burn. If you want crispier treats, keep in oven longer at a lower temperature.
- When cooled, let your pups enjoy. Cut into squares, or whichever shape you prefer. I chose to just cut them up like dessert bars for my dogs.
